Jeep Oil Types and Oil Change Schedule

oil change on a car

Every driver should know when to change their vehicle’s oil, as well as what kind of oil they need. The service center at Parkway Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM knows Jeep SUVs inside and out, and our service technicians can perform Jeep oil changes quickly and efficiently.

How often should you bring your Jeep to our service center for an oil change? And what kind of oil does your particular Jeep require? Read on to learn more about Jeep oil change intervals, synthetic oil vs. conventional oil, recommended Jeep Wrangler oil types, and more.

When to Get a Jeep Oil Change

In general, Jeep SUVs require oil changes every 3,000 to 5,000 miles for conventional oil or every 7,500 to 10,000 miles for synthetic oil. Keep in mind that these intervals can vary, depending on how you use your Jeep.

For example,if you spend a lot of time off-roading around Coshocton in your Jeep Cherokee or Jeep Renegade, you may need to schedule oil changes more frequently than someone who doesn’t, regardless of what’s in the owner’s manual. Be sure to talk with our service team about when to schedule a Jeep oil change near New Philadelphia.

Synthetic vs. Conventional Oil

Synthetic oil is better for your Jeep SUV’s engine. Conventional oil is a mineral-based product refined from crude oil. Synthetic oil is also made from crude oil, but is formulated with chemical compounds that are artificially modified or synthesized. Compared to synthetic oil, conventional oil is:

  • Less chemically stable.
  • More likely to oxidize and acidify.
  • More prone to breaking down and losing its protective qualities.

On the other hand, synthetic oil is better at the following:

  • Preventing sludge and deposit buildup.
  • Reducing engine wear.
  • Regulating high temperatures.
  • Controlling oil breakdown.

Why Are Oil Changes Important?

Oil changes are often forgotten about or put on the back burner. Still, they are one of the simplest, and most important, services you can perform for your vehicle.

Keeping up with regular oil changes will work wonders for your engine. Simply bringing your Jeep to our service center every 10,000 miles, or 1 year, can provide the following benefits for the engine and its performance:

  • Improve gas mileage.
  • Reduce wear and tear on the engine’s mechanical parts.
  • Prevent the build-up of dirt and sludge.
  • Extend the engine’s life.
  • Provide lubrication for the engine’s moving parts.
  • Prevent overheating or total mechanical failure.

Recommended Jeep Oil Types

Today, Jeep SUVs use primarily synthetic oil, because it’s more refined, lasts longer, and does a better job of regulating the heat inside an engine. Here are the recommended oil types for the Jeep SUVs:

  • Jeep Wrangler Oil Type: 0W-20 synthetic oil.
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee Oil Type: 0W-20 synthetic oil.
  • Jeep Cherokee Oil Type: 5W-20 synthetic or 10W-30 synthetic oil (Can also use 0W-20 synthetic oil).
  • Jeep Compass Oil Type: T0W-20 fully synthetic oil.
  • Jeep Renegade Oil Type: 5W-40 synthetic oil for 1.4L engine models or 0W-20 synthetic oil for 2.4L engine models.
  • Jeep Gladiator Oil Type: 0W-20 for the 3.6L engine models, and 5W-40 for the 3.0L engine models.

Note that your Jeep’s recommended oil type and grade may vary, based on the engine and model year. Always check your owner’s manual or speak with one of our Jeep-certified service technicians before changing the oil in your Jeep SUV.
